English formal and Informal Invitation letter for eleventh grade vocational high school (for academic, office and society activities)

What is an invitation letter? It is a document that present a formal request for the presence of an individual as a group of people or organization at an event or an occasion. There are two kinds of invitation letter in English language are formal and informal letter. It has social function of the text or writing in order to invite other people to come or join with the occasion or event that is held by a person, a community or an organization. It could be printed on paper or sent via social media in our gadget such as Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook or email.

Generally, the structure of the text for invitation letter, below; 

  • Envelope
  • Letterhead
  • Addressee and address
  • Opening of the letter and salutation
  • Body of the letter, are;

  1. What occasion or event will be held?
  2. Who is inviter or sender of the invitation letter?
  3. Who is invitee or addressee or recipient of the invitation letter? 
  4. When is the date or detail information of the time of the occasion or event?
  5. Where is the occasion or event will take place? 
  6. What number that can be called?
  7. What dress code of the occasion?
  • Closing (Complimentary Close)
  • Sender's signature and name

So What's different of generic structure of the text between formal and informal invitation letter?

a. Formal Letter

1. The sender's address

2. The date of the letter

3. Recipient/ invitee or addressee and address

4. Greeting or salutation

5. Body of the letter, are; 

  • The writer's invitation expression
  • The writer's purpose in inviting
  • Date, time, place, RSVP, dress code.
  • The writer's brief statement indicating hopes of the recipient's attending.
6. Complimentary Close
7. The sender's signature and name.

b. Informal Letter

Directly or to the point of the information of the invitation into body of the letter, are; 

  • The writer's invitation expression
  • The writer's purpose in inviting
  • Date, time, place, RSVP, dress code.
  • The writer's brief statement indicating hopes of the recipient's attending.
